Elections 2014: BJP’s Poonam Mahajan defeats Priya Dutt from Mumbai North-Central

Poonam Mahajan of the BJP won the Mumbai North Central seat with a margin of 1.86 lakh votes in one of the biggest upsets in this Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra.

She defeated her nearest rival and two-time MP Priya Dutt of the Congress.

The constituency has a significant Muslim, Christian and dalit population, which Dutt, the daughter of Sunil Dutt and sister of actor Sanjay Dutt, banked on for a win.

Congress had considered it their safest seat in the city.

Poonam, 33, is the daughter of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan. Phiroze Palkhiwala of the AAP polled 34,000 votes. MNS had skipped the seat as part of its policy of not opposing BJP candidates in the seat.
