How to Detox from Social Media and Why You Need to
With social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and even Snapchat available on just about every device you own, it’s easier than ever to stay connected to everyone you know all the time—or at least it can feel that way. Social media can be fun and fulfilling in many ways, but it can also be a distraction that keeps you from focusing on other important things in your life like family, friends, hobbies, or even work.
Now is the time to think about that as is social media actually improving our lives? Or have we become slaves to our own creation?
Take a moment and ask yourself: when was the last time you went a full day, from wake to sleep, without checking social media? If sites like Facebook, Twitter, and instagram etc disappeared tomorrow, would you feel empty and depressed? Has social media become an addiction for you?
Beating social media addiction is not something that can be done overnight; However, there are some steps you can take to reduce your use of and dependency on social media, and to help you take control back from the tiny tyrant that is the smartphone.
How Can I Take a Social Media Detox?
Before you can embark on a social media detox, you need to figure out what your trigger points are. Are you getting overwhelmed with Facebook notifications? Or maybe it’s Instagram photos making it hard for you to stay off of your phone. As soon as you can recognize these points, taking a detox becomes much easier.
Steps For Doing Social Media Detox
#1 TURN OFF NOTIFICATIONS
It can be so difficult to detach yourself from social media when your phone lights up every minute with new notifications. So turn them off.
#2 DON’T HAVE YOUR PHONE BY YOU WHILST YOU SLEEP
place your phone on the other side of the room. If the phone is out of reach, we will be less tempted to check it. It is often an automatic reaction to reach for your phone and scroll through social media in bed. If you have to get out of bed to enable this, you will think about why you want your phone, and chances are that this will help you cut down on how much you use it at night.
#3 REMOVE YOUR PHONE FROM YOUR MORNING ROUTINE
do not reach for your phone the moment you get out of bed. For a lot of us, the first thing we do in the morning is to check our phone. Avoid this!
#4 PLACE LESS WEIGHT ON YOUR PERSONAL SOCIAL MEDIA APPEARANCE
one of the big signs of social media addiction is that you spend a lot of time overthinking and over-planning your posts. This causes anxiety and stress. If you place less importance on how and what you post, you will be able to free up your mind from this stress.
A social media detox is exactly what it sounds like—to go away. To disconnect. To unplug. But unlike traditional detoxes (say, drugs or alcohol), a social media detox isn’t about completely cutting off a vice; it’s about finding balance in your life.
