How to become M.D. Doctor in Poland and Practice in Europe
The Medical University of Silesia in Katowice (SUM) was established in 1948. Since then, almost 75 years, the University has been expanding and developing. At the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, in the first year of teaching in the medical and medical-dental faculties, there were just over 200 students. Today, the University has nearly 11,000 students in 5 faculties and 18 medical specialties, honing their skills in 6 teaching hospitals and the Academic Center for Dentistry.
Our mission, as an integral part of national education and research system, is to discover and convey the truth by conducting research and training students.
In 1996 we opened our medicine program for international candidates in English language. In 2023 SUM offers 9 english programs: unified master’s degree program of medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy and pharmacy; first cycle degree program of medical biotechnology, nursing, midwifery and public health and second cycle degree program of medical biotechnology, nursing, midwifery, public health and dietetics. Our significant medicine program is a 6-years program which ends up with formal examination. University offers a 6 month internship after graduation. In our University, the admission for medicine program is possible twice per year (for fall and spring semester). University offers two types of programs: European and international. We have accreditation and recognition of Polish Accreditation Committee, Accreditatiom Committee of Academic Medical Universities, US Department of Education, Medical Board of New York and California. Qualification is based on results from the secondary school leaving examination or final examination in the subjects (advanced/extended level) covered by the recruitment procedure:
– biology – mandatory,
– chemistry or physics or mathematics.
The Dentistry program, our second significant program, takes 5 years and includes theoretical, pre-clinical and clicnical courses and a summer holiday internship.
Medical University of Silesia offers access to one of the biggest in Poland Medical and Simulation Center. It enables us to recreate the working conditions of a real hospital. Education and Medical Simulation Center in Katowice has six simulation rooms (an operating room, an intensive care room, two hospital emergency rooms, a pediatric room and a delivery room, and an area adapted to simulate pre-hospital events with an ambulance simulator).
Complementary admission for the winter semester 2023/24 will be open July, 22.
