New Milan Flyover opens to public now

This monsoon, Mumbaikars will enjoy a “congestion-free” travel in the western suburbs. The much awaited Rail Over Bridge at the Milan Subway constructed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) was thrown open for traffic at the hands of chief minister Prithviraj Chavan in a ceremony held recently.

Authorities anticipate that this flyover will carry more than 35,000 vehicles daily, thereby reducing traffic jams.

Also, the overbridge will give relief to motorists during the monsoon as the area gets flooded frequently.

However, the project is still incomplete as Dayaldas Road, which will connect motorists from Vile Parle East to SV Road, is yet to be widened.

At the event, local MLA Krishna Hegde said, “I have proposed an underpass at Santa Cruz connecting the Milan Subway to take motorists towards the South-bound lane of the Western Express Highway, or else they will have to make a detour below the domestic airport flyover.”

While inaugurating the rail overbridge, Chavan said that this is the first project in the series of half a dozen infrastructure projects that will be opened to the public this year.

Praising the engineers and officials who worked for the flyover, the CM said although there was a two-year delay it will help scores of commuters during the monsoon season.

The project was initially estimated to cost Rs 42 crore but reached Rs 83 crore because of additional costs.
