Hill stations to travel this Summer season in Maharashtra

Summers are the time for vacation and many of them visit hill stations to escape the heat and have a pleasant time. Due to pandemic from the past two years no one has been able to move out and enjoy their life. As state of Maharashtra has relaxed covid-19 rules, one can now travel to their favourite destination. 

Travelling stimulates your brain and encourages the growth of new connections within cerebral matter, relaxes your body and some says that it brings out the new you.

Most popular places to visit this summer are Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar, Matheran, Igatpuri & Chikhaldhara.  

1) Lonavala
Lonavala is a hill station between Mumbai and Pune. Its also famous as a ‘City of Caves’. Lonavala comes to life during the monsoon season as the countryside turns lush green with waterfalls and ponds. Lonavala offers a panoramic view of the lush green hills of the Sahyadri ranges. With it’s natural beauty like green valleys, beautiful waterfalls and the pleasant cool climate, Lonavala is rightly called as the “Jewel of Sahaydri”
By Road: Its 85 to 90 kms from Mumbai and 65 to 68 kms from Pune.  You can travel through NH4 Via Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
All buses Shivneri, Shivashahi, Neeta Volva and other private buses have a halt at Lonavala.
By Air: Nearest Airport is Lohegaon Airport, Pune which is 64 kms away.
By Train: All trains which ply between Mumbai and Pune stop at Lonavala station.
Places to see in and nearby Lonavala are Tiger`s Leap, Bhaja Caves, Karla Caves, Bhushi Dam, Duke`s Nose, Tikona Fort, Pawna Lake, Lohagad Fort, Valvan Dam, Rajmachi Fort, Narayani Dham Temple, Reverse Waterfall, Bhimashankar Temple, there are many Wax Museums too.

2) Mahabaleshwar
Mahabaleshwar is a hill station between Mumbai and Konkan. Its also known as Queen of all Hill stations. Its name is derived from a Lord Mahadev temple and three Sanskrit words, Maha (great), Bal (power) and Ishwar (God). Some people also relate the name with mythological past as the name ‘Mahabaleshwar’ means mighty God.
By Road: Its 263 to 265 kms Mumbai, 120 to 125 kms from Pune, 57 to 60 kms from Satara and 175 – 180 km from Kolhapur.
From Mumbai – You can take the Mumbai – Bangalore Expressway NH 48, then take then turn towards Wai, Pachgani and then to Mahabaleshwar.
From Pune – You can take the NH 48 and then take then turn towards Wai, Pachgani and then to Mahabaleshwar.
All Buses Plying from Mumbai, Pune can reach this destination and they have a halt at Mahabaleshwar.
By Air: Nearest Airport is Lohegaon Airport, Pune which is 120 to 125 kms away.
By Train: Wathar is the nearest railway station 60 kms away from Mahabaleshwar. All trains which ply between Mumbai, Pune and Kolhapur, stop at Wathar Station.
Places to see in and nearby Mahabaleshwar are Elephants Head Point, Dhobi Waterfall, Arther Seat, Echo Point, Venna Lake, Falkland Point, Lingmala Waterfall, Sunset Point, Wilson Point, Mahabaleshwar Temple, Tapola, Elphinstone Point, Pratapgad Fort, Helens Point, Table Land, etc.
3) Matheran
Matheran is a hill station in Karjat Tehsil of Raigad District of Maharashtra. Its one of the closest hill station to Mumbai and automobile free hill station in India. The toy train is a speciality and a major tourist attraction. Matheran leaves visitors speechless with its historical and natural grace.
By Road: It can be reached via Mumbai – Pune Expressway and Karjat. Local State Transport Buses ply between Mumbai, Pune and Panvel. From Mumbai its 85 – 90 kms and from Pune its 120 to 125 kms away. All buses or private cars get near Dasturi and from there you can either walk or take a horse ride or a toy train.
By Air: Nearest Airport is Mumbai Airport which is 85-90 kms away.
By Train: You can catch any local train from CSMT to Karjat and get down at Neral station. From Neral you can either walk, take a horse ride or take the famous toy train.
Places to see in and nearby Matheran are Louisa Point, Charlotte Lake, Monkey Point, Shivaji`s Ladder, One tree Hill Point, Echo Point, Panorama Point, Porcupine Point, Alexander Point, Little Chowk Point, Honeymoon Point, King George Point, Lord Point and many more things to see.

4) Igatpuri
Igatpuri is located in Nashik District of Maharashtra in the Western Ghats. Igatpuri is known for Vipasanna where ancient technique of meditation is taught. It is also surrounded by the highest peak in Sahayadri,i.e. Western Ghats, hence its one of the best destination for trekkers and hikers. 
By Road: It can be reached from Mumbai via Mumbai-Agra NH3 Highway. Its 130 to 135 kms from Mumbai and 45 to 50 kms from Nashik. There are private buses ply from Mumbai to Nashik has a stop for Igatpuri. 
By Air: Nearest Airport is Mumbai Airport which is 130 – 135 kms away.
By Train: You can catch any train plying between CSMT, LTT towards Nashik and get down at Nashik station. From Nashik to Igatpuri is 45 to 50 kms by road.
Places to see in and nearby Igatpuri
 are Tringalwadi Fort, Vaitarna Dam, Vihigaon Waterfall, Kalsubai Peak, Bhatsa River Valley, Vipasanna International Academy, Amruteshwar Temple, Dhammagiri, Talegaon Lake, Avandha Fort, Karoli Ghat, Ghatandevi Temple, Bhavali Dam, Sandhan Valley, Kasara Ghat, Myanmar Gate and many more things to see.

5) Chikhaldara
Chikhaldara is a hill station located in Amravati District of Maharastra. Chikhaldara has beautifull lakes, panoramic viewpoints and exotic wildlife.
By Road: It can be reached from Mumbai, Pune, Amravati, Akola.  Regular MSRTC buses / Private buses ply from Amravati / Akola to Chikhaldara.
From Mumbai its 660 to 665 kms via Mumbai Agra National Highway. From Pune its 600 to 605 kms via Aurangabad route.
By Air: Nearest Airport is Akola Airport which is 135 – 140 kms.
By Train: The nearest railway station is Badnera or Amravati station which is 86-90 kms. There are regular trains plying between Amravati and Mumbai or Pune or Nagpur to this station.
Places to see in and nearby 
Chikhaldara are Devi Point, Hurricane Point, Prospect Point, Shiv Sagar point, Mozari Point, Melghat Tiger Reserve, Gugamal National Park, Dhakana-Kolkaz National Park, Narnala Fort, Botanical Gardens, Tribal Museum, Semadoh Lake& Kalapani Lake.

So visit one of these scenic hill stations and have an amazing trip and family time together.
