Lata Didi, we will miss you

The Nighintagale of India left us all on 6th February 2022, Sunday at 8.12 am at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai due to multi organ failure. She was 92 years of age & her mortal remains draped in national flag, were taken from a truck to her home and then to Shivaji Park, Dadar at 6.30 pm where she was cremated with full state of honours. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi attended the funeral at Shivaji Park. Our PM flew from Delhi to Mumbai to pay last respect to Lata ji and give condolence to Mangeshkar family.  

Lataji was born in Indore on 18th September 1929, her parents father Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and mother Shevanti. Lataji`s siblings – Meena, Asha, Usha and brother Hridaynath are all accomplished singers and musician.
Lata Mangeshkar was a recipient of Padma Bhushan (1969), Dadasaheb Phalke (1989), Maharashtra Bhushan (1997), Padma Vibhushan (1999), Bharat Ratna (2001) and Legion of Honour (2007) Awards. She has also won National Film Award, Filmfare award for Female Play back singing, Filmfare Lifetime achievement award and many many more awards.
She was an Icon of Indian Cinema and has sung songs in almost 36 Indian languages. Government of India has marked decided that as a mark of respect, two days of mourning will be observed from Feb 6 to 7. During State Mourning National Flag will be flown at half-mast from Feb 6 to 7 throughout India.

Many Politicians, Actors, Directors took to social media to pay their last respect to Lata Didi.

I am anguished beyond words. The kind and caring Lata Didi has left us. She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerise people.

Lata Didi’s songs brought out a variety of emotions. She closely witnessed the transitions of the Indian film world for decades. Beyond films, she was always passionate about India’s growth. She always wanted to see a strong and developed India.


President of India, Shri Ramnath Kovind:
Lata-ji’s demise is heart-breaking for me, as it is for millions the world over. In her vast range of songs, rendering the essence and beauty of India, generations found expression of their inner-most emotions. A Bharat Ratna, Lata-ji’s accomplishments will remain incomparable.


An artist born but once in centuries, Lata-didi was an exceptional human being, full of warmth, as I found whenever I met her. The divine voice has gone quiet forever but her melodies will remain immortal, echoing in eternity. My condolences to her family and admirers everywhere.

लता दिदी आमच्या कुटुंबाचा एक महत्त्वाचा भाग होत्या. इतकी वर्षे त्यांचा असा जिव्हाळ्याचा सहवास मिळणं यासारखे भाग्य नाही. त्यांची गाणी, प्रेम आणि आशिर्वाद सदैव सोबत राहतील.

I am extremely saddened by the demise of Lata Mangeshkar Ji, the Nightingale of Indian Cinema and legendary singer. India has lost its voice in the death of Lata ji, who has enthralled music lovers in India & across the globe with her mellifluous & sublime voice for many decades.
